Alstom in India today announced that it has won a contract worth Rs 124 crores (approximately €18 million) with Dans Energy Private Limited for a new hydropower plant in India’s Sikkim region. The 96 MW Jorethang Loop Hydro Electric Project will be based at the city of Jorethang on the bank of the river Rangeet, a tributary of the river Teesta, the state’s largest river. The plant’s electricity output will be connected to the country’s power grid.
The order entails end-to-end manufacturing of equipment at Alstom Hydro’s Vadodara facility in Gujurat State, one of the company’s largest hydro equipment manufacturing hubs worldwide. The contract includes the supply, installation, testing & commissioning of electro-mechanical equipment** for the plant’s two 48 MW units.
Francois Carpentier, Managing Director & Vice Chairman, APIL, said, “We are proud to receive this order as it not only showcases our technical expertise but also reinforces recognition of Alstom Hydro’s capabilities in India. Being a hydroelectric project, it is environmentally friendly and represents another reliable, clean energy option for our customers.”
At 147 GW, India has the fifth largest installed energy generating capacity in the world, of which hydropower makes up approximately one quarter. Another two thirds are made up by oil, coal and gas. Coal is the dominating fuel source, but the country is diversifying its energy mix to include low-carbon fuels such as hydro, wind power and nuclear.
