Alstom has won a contract for the supply of equipment to a new hydroelectric dam in China, underlining its position as one of the leading equipment suppliers to the country’s hydropower industry.
The contract, worth approximately €50 million and awarded to Alstom by Jiangxi Province Xiajiang Water Control Project Headquarters, involves the supply of five 40 MW bulb turbine and generator units to the new Xiajiang hydropower station currently under construction on the Ganjiang river, 160km from Nanchang city in Jiangxi Province. The plant is due to be operational in summer 2013.
The equipment for the project will be manufactured and supplied by Alstom Hydro China Co. Ltd (AHC), Alstom’s new manufacturing site at Tianjin, inaugurated today.

Hydropower accounts for 22% of China’s electricity generation capacity and is expanding at a rate of 15 GW per year. Over 110 new hydro projects are currently in the planning stage, to be completed by 2020. Once finished, these plants will add an extra 200 GW of power to the country’s grid, and will account for 28% of installed capacity.
Alstom is one of the leading hydro producers in China. To date, the company has signed contracts for hydro turbines and generators covering 43 GW in the country, out of which approximately 28 GW are already in commercial operation Alstom has been directly involved in the construction of the Three Gorges Dam, the world’s largest power plant, for which it supplied 14 of the dam’s 32 units, each with an output of 700 MW. Other recent hydro projects include Li Yuan (four 600 MW units) and Xiangjiaba (four 800 MW units). The 800 MW turbines designed, engineered and installed by Alstom for Xianjiaba are the world’s largest hydro turbines ever manufactured to date.
