New GE Oil & Gas Emissions Technology Makes Debut at Power Plantin Cremona, Italy

A cogeneration power plant in Cremona, Italy is the site of the world’s first commercial application of new 15 ppm Dry Low NOx (DLN) technology developed by GE Oil & Gas, which is capable of meeting the strictest DLN emissions standards in Europe.

Thanks to this technology breakthrough, the GE10 gas turbine at the plant is setting a new standard for controlling the NOx emissions for mechanical drive gas turbines, demonstrating the capability of the 15 ppm NOx emissions across a wide 50 to 100% load range.

A cogeneration combined-cycle power plant owned and operated by AEM Gestioni is supplying electric power and district heating for the town of Cremona. The train, originally supplied by the former Turbotecnica division of GE Oil & Gas, is composed of a PGT10 Steam Injection gas turbine driving an electrical generator through a speed reducing gear box. On the same axis, a steam turbine is acting as a helper, contributing to the gross power output of the train. The steam is generated by a heat recovery steam generator (HRSG) by recovering the gas turbine’s exhaust waste heat. Steam turbine exhaust is used for district heating.

GE Oil & Gas upgraded the existing PGT10 gas turbine at the plant with the similar and more recent GE10 model to achieve both power increase and emission reduction. As a side benefit, the increased airflow rate of the gas turbine will allow the HRSG to produce more steam, which in turn means extra power from the steam turbine.

“At GE, we are leveraging technology to provide advanced solutions that will help our customers meet their environmental challenges. Development of the 15 ppm DLN combustion system, designed for use with our 12-megawatt class GE10 gas turbines, is an outstanding example of that effort,” said Claudi Santiago, president and CEO of GE Oil & Gas.

GE replaced the high and low pressure module of the gas turbine as well as the combustion chamber. The upgrade also included the modification of existing auxiliaries, replacement of the control panel with a state-of-the-art Mark VI control system and certification of the new package with the latest European safety codes (e.g. ATEX, PED, etc.).

Originally developed for pipeline or other mechanical drive applications, the 15 ppm combustion system also has been adapted for power generation applications using GE10 gas turbines. Extensive operability tests were completed in 2007 at the GE Oil & Gas GE10 test rig in Florence, demonstrating reliable operation with consistent achievement of the 15 ppm performances across wide ambient temperature and load ranges

Based on the well-proven PGT10 gas turbine, the GE10 gas turbine is a high efficiency, heavy-duty machine developed for power generation and mechanical drive applications. Since its introduction in 1999, GE10 technology has continued to evolve, with improvements in output, thermal efficiency and maintenance intervals.

GE Oil & Gas technology is well established in Italy, with more than 250 centrifugal compressors and 130 gas turbines installed across the country.
