AMEC joins forces with HCC to pursue nuclear new-build in India

AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Hindustan Construction Co. Limited (HCC), the leading engineering construction company in India.

This strategic partnership will bring world-class design, safety and project/programme management experience to support the development of new civil nuclear projects in India. HCC has proven expertise and a successful track record in the Indian nuclear power sector, having constructed 50 per cent of India’s nuclear power capacity.

“We are delighted to have the opportunity to join the nuclear power renaissance in India. This mutually advantageous partnership marks the beginning of a new nuclear era in India and we are proud to be part of it,” commented Didier Pfleger, Chief Operating Officer, Power and Process, AMEC.

India is the sixth largest electricity generating country having a total installed capacity of about 100,000 MW of which 2.5 per cent is contributed by its nuclear sector. The Government of India has revealed its ambitious plans to enhance the current installed nuclear power capacity to 20,000 MW by 2020 and to 63,000 MW by 2032. Nuclear energy has the potential to address a major portion of the India’s power shortage and climate change concerns.

HCC Chairman & Managing Director Ajit Gulabchand said: “This partnership will enhance India’s ability to implement new generation of nuclear power technologies. HCC is the country’s leading player in nuclear power plant construction. AMEC, with its globally benchmarked nuclear technology experience, is the ideal partner to help us catapult India to the cutting edge of nuclear power generation. Our partnership will provide flexible and technology-independent platforms to reduce the cost of building new nuclear power plants in India.”

“AMEC has world-class technical and engineering capability across all disciplines in the nuclear sector. Our independent technology expertise allows us to provide leading edge solutions that will assist India in bringing new technologies to its nuclear sector,” concluded Tim Small, Director Global Markets & Strategy, Power and Process, AMEC.
