AMEC awarded 11-year contract with EDF for new UK nuclear power stations

AMEC, the international engineering and project management company, has signed a major contract with EDF Group to support their Architect Engineering operation for the proposed delivery of four new EPR* nuclear reactors at Hinkley Point and Sizewell in the UK.

The contract will run for 11 years, with an option to extend for a further four. Under the contract AMEC will work with EDF in France and the UK in the key areas of project management, engineering and construction management. AMEC will also be responsible for assisting the EDF Group project management teams with engineering and site management activities, together with providing specific engineering studies for the non-nuclear sections of plant in the power stations.

“We are delighted to have been awarded this contract in the strategically important nuclear energy sector,” said AMEC Chief Executive Samir Brikho. “Nuclear, along with the natural resources, clean energy, water and environmental sectors, forms a key part of our Vision 2015 business strategy for assured growth.”

Humphrey Cadoux-Hudson, EDF Energy's Managing Director Nuclear New Build, said:

“We are delighted that AMEC will be part of the team we are bringing together to support our nuclear new build project in the UK. We want to work with many leading British companies in relationships that will last many years to deliver our plans for low carbon new nuclear.

“The huge investment we are making to deliver new nuclear is good news for the UK supply chain and workers because it will create significant employment and business opportunities over the coming years.

“Our project will employ several thousand people onsite during the construction phase and many more offsite both in EDF and throughout the supply chain.”

Neil Bruce, Executive Director of AMEC, added: “As part of a balanced energy mix, nuclear power will help address the UK's need for security of supply and reduced CO2 emissions. EDF have said they want to have the first of their UK reactors generating electricity by the end of 2017, provided the right investment framework is in place, and AMEC's skills and expertise in the nuclear field can help them achieve that.

“We have more than 50 years experience in the nuclear sector and this contract with one of the world's leading energy companies is a further illustration that AMEC has a leading role to play in the global nuclear renaissance.”

Mike Saunders, President of AMEC's Power & Process Europe business, commented: “The appointment demonstrates EDF's confidence in the UK capability to help deliver this ambitious programme.

“We have been working closely with EDF on this for more than three years. The signing of this contract is recognition of the commitment of both companies to bring together our respective skills to deliver a new fleet of nuclear power stations and help secure the UK's energy future.”
