juil. 30 2008 | CIUDEN and ENDESA present their CO2 capture storage projects in Brussels to the Energy Commissioner's cabinet
The Spanish government sponsored Energy City Foundation (Fundación Estatal Cuidad de la Energía or CIUDEN for its initials in Spanish) and ENDESA GENERACION have presented their respective CO2 capture and storage projects to Energy Commissioner Andris Piebalgs’ Cabinet, aided by two of Spain’s permanent EU representatives.
This is part of a joint ENDESA-CIUDEN initiative to demonstrate the technological and economical viability of various alternatives for capturing CO2 to the European Union and Spain in particular.
Work has been exhaustive over the past three months to raise international awareness for these projects in Brussels among the General Directorates for Energy and Research, the teams in charge of the Strategic Energy Technology Plan (SET) and Spanish MEPs.
CIUDEN is finalising the agreement to build an experimental plant in El Bierzo, in the Spanish province of León, to develop advanced technologies into the capture of CO2. Thanks to its technical characteristics and operational flexibility this will be the most cutting-edge plant in the world. The programme is now researching geological CO2 storage and the construction of a pilot plant.
For its part, ENDESA plans to construct a 500 MWe show facility by 2015 using oxy-fuel combustion technology; one of the most advanced methods of capturing CO2. ENDESA wants this initiative to one of the 12 pilot projects chosen by the European Community. The joint ENDESA/CIUDEN initiative should significantly boost ENDESA’s chances in this regard.
ENDESA is present in the development of other CO2 capture technologies, both post-combustion, with the construction of a pilot plant at the Compostilla Thermal Power Plant as part of the Ministry for Industry, Tourism and Trade’s CENIT-CO2 Programme and pre-combustion through its investee, Elcogas.
CIUDEN promotes its activities at specialist forums such as the European Technological Platform for Zero Emissions, the International Energy Agency (Greenhouse Gas Emissions Programme) and various international conferences on the capture and geological storage in Yokohama and Washington. Thanks to these, CIUDEN’s initiatives are considered to be the most important pilot schemes worldwide.
The Energy Commissioner’s Cabinet was very interested in the projects, particularly the fact that they have been developed in Spain and utilise technologies using local coals thus improving the EU’s energy dependency. Special emphasis was made on the advantages of the oxy-fuel combustion technology.
